Whats the best duck breed?

Postby sallygardens on Sat Aug 02, 2008 9:00 am

We have decided to get ducks at last after long consideration and thought. We want a breed that's a good slug eater, but also good for the table ... of course eggs are always a bonus too!

What varieties of duck, if any, suits this best, or are they all good slug eaters. I know some are heavier for the table?... muscovy for eg

After a bit of research I've discovered that Khaki Campbells are good slug eaters. We got two Aylesbury ducks in the end, they seem to sift the grass for slugs too, so we're happy. We bought a drake and a hen, with the thought they may provide ducklings for the table but I have a feeling the cost of feeding a drake and ducklings will be too high to make it financially viable. It probably makes more sense to have 2 females and just make us of the eggs.
