Where to buy vegetable seeds online?

Postby paulsie on Mon Jan 19, 2009 3:28 pm

Any recommendations on where to buy vegetable seeds online, as they do seem to be very expensive in the Irish garden shops? Google found the following (both deliver to Eire which is good):
http://www.suttons.co.uk/Shop/Vegetable+Seeds/List/
http://www.chilternseeds.co.uk/chilternseeds/211/index/

Any Irish companies?

Hi Paulsie, not Irish but I've just bought some from here: http://www.realseeds.co.uk/ - very impressed with speed of delivery and they come with instructions for saving your own seed so hopefully I won't need to buy as many next year and will be able to swap some to increase varieties. They don't sell everything though - any idea where I can get seed potatoes in small numbers?

The Organic Centre

Postby karenlq on Tue Jan 20, 2009 12:55 am

The Organic Centre in Lietrim has seeds and an online form to print out and mail. Even better are the open days where people are welcome to look around the gardens and polytunnels.

I found the most delicious 2nd early potatoes in Woodies last year. We will be having them again!! They were organic too. Many garden Centers have seeds, the one in Cavan town even has Artichoke seeds. Shop early though, one thing I have learned about Ireland is to buy things when you see them otherwise you could be out of luck!

Hi,

Heritage seeds at Tullynally Castle, Castlepollard sell seeds online, they are great if you want something a bit unusual and the emphasis on seeds that will do well in our Irish climate. It might be worth a look.

Good luck

Hi Morag, do you have a link for them? I can't seem to google their website. Ta in advance.
Never thought of woodies karenlq. There's a couple of local garden centres I could try too.

Hi Kirstie,

Try wild about veg.com They have some unusual veggies as well as the F1's.

We are trying raised beds this year to help in the battle against slugs and the heavy rainfall.

Good luck with yours....

Have you found the Irish Seedsavers ASsociation? They stock all the old heritage seed strains and do marvellous work, worth supporting them.

We also buy from Chilterns.

A local library here has arranged a seed swap, people come in with their packets of seeds and swap for other stuff, even just a couple of each type ... brilliant idea and easy to do in other parts of the country. There's also talk of a seedling swap later in the season ... another fab idea.
Visit our rural Irish smallholding at www.sallygardens.typepad.com where we move smoothly from one crisis to the next and teach others how to do the same!

Thanks guys, I hadn't thought of Woodies and the likes Karenlq!

Notice B&Q have their own range of seeds right alongside the Suttons range but at half the price (and better), and i'm wondering is there any reason to pay the premium for the Suttons ones?

At a guess Suttons or one of the other big suppliers may even rebadge their seeds as the B&Q ones. I bought some so will let you know how my "cheap" B&Q seeds work out :-)
