Finding/Buying a Smallholding

I'd be interested in discussing people's various experiences searching for a smallholding of their own. Where does one start? What counties in Ireland/England are best? How much (money) is a reasonable amount to start out with? All these kinds of "locating a property" questions intrigue me.
