fencing for hens

Postby glaslower on Sat Jan 17, 2009 1:16 pm

Hi

I'm looking for recommendations for the best possible mobile fencing for my hens. The reason I need it is the usual - foxes.

I say 'mobile' because I'd like to be able to take up the fencing and move it to another part of the garden if needed.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

hen housing

Postby Morhogs on Sun Jan 18, 2009 11:44 am

Hi,

How many hens do you have? I've seen mobile hen housing in the country smallholder magazine, you could check them out and see if you could make somthing similar. Its very difficult to create mobile runs as they should be buried down into the ground around the perimeter to stop Mr. fox digging in or worse the mink. Could you build a large enclosure and then divide it into two areas so whilst the chickens are pecking about in one area the other is resting. We have a chicken ark that can accomodate 6 chickens and can be moved around the garden and we have not (touch wood) had fox troubles, although we keep a few pigs beside the chickens and they seem to be a good fox deterent. Hope this a help.

Good luck

Hi Glaslower,
Have a similar issue with fox(es). I invested with a electric mobile fence (cost c€200) I also have a home made arc with handles at each end for moving. I move my chickens to a new area of garden every week or two, and keep them within the fence all the time. Works well.

We join 3 or 4 of these when our geese graze out in the fields. There is a lot of foxes around here and never had a loss when using this type of net.You do need a very good energiser. The one problem we do have is our sheep getting their heads stuck in it even the very small holes in the bottom.Try this link. Our permenant pen is 6ft chain link with a foot buried in the ground. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Electric-Poul ... 240%3A1318
