Broad Beans, 2nd flowering?

Postby sallygardens on Fri Aug 01, 2008 5:39 pm

Has anybody managed to get a second crop from broad beans or do they just have a once off cropping? I was told a second crop is possible but I've not managed it despite extra compost and feeding. I think successional sowing is probably the way forward for long harvests.

I've heard you can fool some legumes such as runners into a smaller second flowering (provided you've kept up with the picking) by feeding them a big dose of high potash feed just as they finish cropping - but I've not heard it said about broad beans!

I think broad beans are a once off myself, I followed the instructions given by a friend for a 2nd crop, and it didn't work .... cut off at the ground, compost, and let them regrow. Maybe it doesn't work on a clay soil.
